David joined RBC GAM’s Emerging Markets (EM) Bond team in 2004 and has been directly involved in the management of the firm’s EM bond assets since 2010. He manages EM bond allocations for several of the firm’s fixed income funds, focusing on sovereign and quasi-sovereign debt, employing emerging market corporate bonds and local currency emerging market investments tactically. David is also a member of the firm’s Fixed Income Strategy Committee.
David’s experience and analytical skills have allowed him to develop a solid understanding of EM economies, including both their opportunities and vulnerabilities. His exceptional skill derives from his ability to identify the drivers of returns and to prudently manage risk—both of which have served our clients well.
Among his many accomplishments, David has developed a proprietary model to help forecast the short-term trend in industrial production in China. In addition, he has developed and continuously works to improve upon the team’s risk management reports. He has created a variety of trade-signaling models, as well as asset allocation tools used in managing the RBC Global High Yield strategy. He broadened his skills in 2013 when he joined the Emerging Market Foreign Exchange team and helped to manage the firm’s EM FX strategy.
David is a graduate (BSc Economics) of the prestigious Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico (ITAM), a private research-oriented university whose alumni include Mexican presidents, central bank governors and finance ministers. He has previously held positions with the Mexican Ministry of International Affairs, where he worked as an economic analyst providing support in the development of various Mexican trade agreements. From 1997 to 2001 he worked with a leading asset management firm in Mexico City, analyzing investment opportunities across USD- and MXN- denominated instruments. After moving to Canada in 2001, David completed his MBA at the Rotman School of Management in Toronto.
A longtime enthusiast of global economics, David has travelled on behalf of the investment team throughout Latin America and has attended both the spring and autumn meetings of the International Monetary Fund since 2004.
